京都では宗教行事からのいわれで「大文字五山送り火」というのが正式である。

 

一般的に、代々の京都在住者・出身者は「送り火」という表現を使うし、あるいは単に「大文字」「大文字さん」と言うが、マスコ

 

ミを含め「大文字焼き」と誤って表現されることがしばしばある。これは、奈良高円山など他所で行われる大文字焼きと混同された

 

ものと思われる。京都の人々は「大文字焼き」という表現を嫌悪するのが通常である。さらに、「大文字山焼き」と言われることも

 

あるが、山焼きは、新芽を出させるために山腹の広い範囲を焼くことであって全く異なる。
